The Miracle of Jeunesse Questions and Answers
Presented by Dr. Nathan Newman, M.D.
Dave Phelps: We have a number of very excellent questions that all of you have submitted. I’m going to ask these questions and Dr. Newman will provide the answers. Dr. Newman, why don’t you come up here?
Alright, the first question that has been asked is the following: “Dr. Newman, you have discussed the stem cell lift. Can you correlate that with the product Luminesce™?”
Dr. Newman: Basically, we are using true stem cells, meaning, the cells themselves. We’re taking the cells from the fat, separating it out, and then injecting it back into the body. The cells are producing what is in Luminese™, but there are no cells in Luminesce™. Does this make sense? In the laboratory, we grow the stem cells and the language we talked about earlier and we bottle it. In the body, they are producing it naturally, and that’s how it works. Now, a lot of times I tell my patients to use Luminesce™ in conjunction with a stem cell lift because they’ll see faster and better results. The skin gets better and that’s how they correlate. The main thing to understand is that there are no live cells within the Luminesce™.
Dave Phelps: Thank you. “Can you discuss further if there are studies showing the effects of Luminesce™ to substantiate the results that we are seeing?”
Dr. Newman: I don’t know if you remember when I was showing the slides with the percentages. That was actually a study that was done on the product and that study was basically showing how people who use the product under controlled circumstances benefited from the product. If you want scientific studies in terms of biopsies and looking at it under a microscope, it’s hard to do this in a cosmetic setting. How many of you are willing to have a scar on your face?
Technically, I could do this and put the scar on their arms, but for cosmetic reasons, most people are not willing to have a scar.
However, if you look at the product in terms of the other things that we’ve done–for example, wound healing–there is a lot of data for the stem cells. There is a lot of data out there, but not on the product for cosmetics by itself. If you look at the product objectively, which is what occurred with the clinical study, and look at the skin, you will see that this is where the results are.
Dave Phelps: “In the KABC video, the results of your stem cell lift are very dramatic. Can we say that the same technology is what makes Luminesce™ such a powerful product?”
Dr. Newman: Yes, absolutely–it’s the same technology. It’s the stem cells that are doing the rejuvenation. The difference is, when I’m doing the procedure, I’m also putting in fat to give it volume. Luminesce™ is not going to give you volume or make you plump up like that. What it does do is tell your cells to renew themselves, making your lines better and your skin smoother. It’s going to take away some of the damage that has occurred over the years from aging, lifestyle, or sun exposure. This is the same process that’s going on when you apply Luminesce™ to your skin–you are telling your skin to make new collagen, elastin, and blood vessels so as to give the skin a more youthful appearance. The
introduction of fat into the skin is the major difference between the product and the stem cell lift procedure.
Dave Phelps: “Anti-aging products are very popular with people in the baby boom generation. If younger people in their 20s and 30s for example, use Luminesce™ before wrinkles are a problem, will the stem cell technology of Luminesce™ help to slow the onset of the visible signs of aging?”
Dr. Newman: If you notice, there was a wide range in the age of most of the patients that I showed you. Many of the patients that you saw were just turning back the clock a little bit. If you wait until you’re 50 or 60 to try to start taking care of yourself, obviously you’re not going to do as well as if you had started earlier. If you use Luminsce™ at a younger age, you’re not reversing your age; you’re simply starting to maintain yourself earlier. This is why maintenance is so important. Using Luminesce™ will help you to better maintain your skin and your cells, which is the whole idea of preventive medicine–to make sure we don’t get the damage in the first place.
You and can use it anywhere on your body. We’re using it predominately on the face because that’s where most people are worried about, but I’ve had people using it on their hands and necks as well.
Dave Phelps: “I am using only Luminsce™ on my face these days, but for makeup, etc., can I also use other products in combination with the Luminsce™?”
Dr. Newman: Absolutely. Luminesce™ is only one part of a skin care line. That’s why we’re going to bring in other products to compliment Luminesce™ that will incorporate this technology. I currently have patients who use Luminsce™ and I tell them that they still need to use sunscreen and moisturizer. I tell them they can continue to use make-up. The first thing that should go on the skin once you wash your face is Luminesce™. After that, you can put anything else you want on, so long as you don’t put anything else between your skin and Luminsce™ because this will prevent the product from penetrating. The important chemical language I spoke about earlier will not be able to go through another cream to penetrate into your skin. If you want the effects of Luminesce™, you have to wash your skin, apply it, and then put everything else on afterwards. If you choose to apply a cream on top of that, you’re probably going to get better results because it will drive the product into the skin and you will get better effects.
Dave Phelps: “Today, Luminesce™ is generally promoted to be used on the face. What benefits are to be expected if we use Luminsce™ on other parts of the body?”
Dr. Newman: Basically, Luminesce™ is going to rejuvenate the skin. Most people use it on their face, neck, and hands; however you can also use it on other places such as your chest. Other people choose to use the product for other reasons besides cosmetic. Let’s say for example, you have a lot of rosacea and the redness often associated with it–Luminesce™ will take away some of that redness. It will also help to reduce a lot inflammatory acne, which is often very red and painful. If you have eczema, atopic dermatitis, or a rash, it will help to reduce the inflammation and calm the skin down. This is what people have used the product for most often.
Other doctors have told me they’ve used the product for canker sores and have seen positive results. I’ve also had people tell me they’ve used it for post-neuralgic pain, which are nerve endings that have become sensitive. Most recently, one of my patients from England emailed me about a laser procedure she had done, after which she had become very sensitive to the sun. After having done these treatments, she wasn’t able to resume her normal activity, even with the application of creams and the sunscreens. She was truly suffering, but after doing the combination of the procedure and using Luminesce™ on her, she’s doing much better. I was able to take that inflammation away and re-train the nerve endings to recreate new ones by promoting the natural cell growth through the stem cells in Luminsce™.
Dave Phelps: “At Jeunesse, we emphasize the adult stem cell technology that makes Luminesce™ such a unique product. Is there any connection between Luminesce™ and embryonic stem cells?”
Dr. Newman: Excellent question–let me give you a little background on what stem cells are. Stem cells are cells that can become other cells. They are basically multi-tasking cells that fix and replace other damaged cells. The term “embryonic stem cell” refers to a cell that comes from an embryo. Human beings come from these embryonic stem cells. These types of cells can become anything–different parts of your body or different parts for the organs in your body–and to date, this lack of control with embryonic stem cells is really what most of the research and the controversy is about. There are many ethical concerns about the use of “embryonic” stem cells. The technology used to develop Luminesce™ only involves adult stem cells. There is no connection whatsoever to embryonic stem cells.
The technology used to create Luminesce™ uses adult stem cells that are harvested from human fat. It is in these fat tissues that the greatest concentration of stem cells may be found. These fat tissues come from people who have been screened and blood tested before we collect the fat to make sure they don’t have any diseases. We then take the fat and grow it in a lab, and we test it again to make sure there is no contamination, including viruses and micro-bacteria. Once we do all this, screen it, and determine its safe, we can use that product in your bottle of Luminesce™. It’s natural, it’s safe, and it’s perfectly compatible with natural body processes. It is a perfect product because it actually belongs on your skin.
Dave Phelps: “Does the amount of Luminesce™ you put on your face make a difference? If a little bit is good, is more better?”
Dr. Newman: It depends on who you ask. There is no limit to how much you can use, but the logic that “the more you use, the more it benefits” is flawed. You should use enough to cover the area you are treating and you should do it frequently to maintain this area. You have to do this twice a day using the amount that is already measured that is supposed to cover your face. Honestly–no one I know uses one pump. My wife and I use two to three pumps to cover our faces. Use however much covers your face. I mean, if you feel you need more you can use it. Will you get better results? You’ll probably get faster results because you’re covering more of an area, but once you’ve covered it and you keep putting on more, I’m not sure if you’re going to get any more results.
Dave Phelps: “Will there be any additional products available using the same stem cell technology used in Luminesce™ that might improve or remove heavy pigmentations and deep age spots?”
Dr. Newman: Regarding the age spot question–most age spots are from sun exposure, though some skin discoloration is from different post-inflammatory changes. Let’s say for example, you get acne, a rash, or a burn, and then you get discoloration afterwards. Another example would be malassezia or other spots that can occur from hormonal changes that are causing skin discoloration. These spots are not all the same and the cause will really dictate what the results will be. I’ve had some people and patients come up to me and say they’re using the product, their skin is getting better, and the discoloration is going away. I’ve also had some people tell me they’ve used everything on their skin and it’s still not going away. Again, the cause will dictate what the results will be. Some people will see improvements of their discoloration and their tone will get better, while others may need to add additional products–which we talked about coming out with–to help to do that. Still, some other people may need laser treatments, chemical peels, and stronger treatments to target those areas to get the skin color to be more even. To answer your question of whether or not it helps–it absolutely will help to even your skin tone. Will it get rid of everything? No, it will probably not get rid of everything.
Dave Phelps: “Do you have any advice on how we should store this product? I’ve notice that in hot weather, if the product is in my car, it gets a little bit thinner, but the slippery texture is still the same. Do you have any comment about this?”
Dr. Newman: Yes. Oh, you want the answer? OK. We talked about this being a live product. So, when we grow this in the laboratory and we get the stem cells, we want to put it on the skin. The skin is at a pH of 5.5– it’s acidic; 7 is neutral, and anything below it is acidic. Your skin is at a pH of 5.5, which is ideal–that’s where you want it to be. If we want to put a cream on the skin to make it better, we want it to be the same pH. You want it to be below 7 and about at 5.5, and you don’t want to go too far below this because you will start to peel. If you want it to improve your skin tone, you will need it to be around 5.5.
When we get the stem cells to make this product, that’s where we are ideally putting it in–at 5.5. If we take this product, bottle it, and put it in the refrigerator, it’s probably going to maintain longer than if we were to put it in the hot sun of Tuscon, AZ, or somewhere that’s really hot. If you put it in the sun you will denature the product. Like any product, putting it in extreme heat will break it down because that’s what heat does. You don’t want to store the product in a very hot location–instead, try to maintain it at room temperature so that it won’t change the pH of the product or the quality. Does the product still work if you don’t do this? Yes, but it might not be as effective, depending on how much heat exposure it’s had. If you really boil it, it’s not going to work that well.
Dave Phelps: “Due to the live nature of the ingredients, does even the slightest variation in the viscosity or color affect the efficacy of the product?”
Dr. Newman: The color changes that you’re seeing are due to the pH indicator that we put in the product at the laboratory. We’re going to take that indicator out so that no one has to worry about that anymore. The main thing to keep in mind with regards to the pH of the product is that we keep it within
the proper parameter to ensure that we continue to get the same sort of product consistently. Before we bottle the product, we check each batch to make sure that these parameters are correct. Again, if you’re going to expose the product to heat, it’s going to denature it and cause a runny consistency. In terms of efficacy, it’s going to be as effective as long as you don’t expose it to heat, regardless of whether or not the color is a bit whiter or pinker–this doesn’t make any difference.
Dave Phelps: “Is it possible for the product to be too rich for the skin? Why do people sometimes have red spots after using it?”
Dr. Newman: Remember that this is a live product and it’s talking to your cells. If you have some issue in the area that you’re treating, those cytokines, interleukins, or whatever process is going on in your skin, is interacting with Luminesce™ and the product is trying to heal it. Luminesce™ is trying to tell your cells to heal themselves. Sometimes, one of the ways your body heals itself is by creating an inflammatory reaction to something that it doesn’t like, so it’s possible that you could have a micro-infection or something else going on that you can’t see; once you apply Luminesce™, it reacts to this infection. However, it should go away. If you notice blotches or redness that doesn’t go away, then this is not normal–it’s probably this type of reaction. I have never seen this happen to anybody in my practice who has used the product. If you have specific people who are experiencing this, I would like to know.
Dave Phelps: “Are there side effects or negative indications that can be expected from using Luminsce™?”
Dr. Newman: Luminesce™ is the most natural product out there–it’s as close as you can get to applying your own stem cells, so any side effects are basically how your body reacts to these cells. Hypothetically, you can have reactions to anything you put on your skin. Generally, because it's such a natural product, I have not seen one person in my practice whose has had a reaction to it. Though I have heard that a few people have had some redness or some reactions to it, again, it may be a reaction to something else they are putting on their skin, or pre-existing condition. I’m still trying to figure out if this is what’s happening, but I’ve never seen an allergic reaction to the product, and I’ve never seen anybody have any problems while using the product. Hypothetically, anybody can be allergic to anything, including any sort of topical cream, but it’s highly unlikely with this product.
Dave Phelps: “Sometimes, when I watch infomercials on television, some products seem to promise immediate results that seem too good to be true. In your medical opinion, how long should people who are using Luminesce™ expect to see benefits?”
Dr. Newman: Good question. Actually, there are products that can give you immediate results, though they’re only topical and not in the skin. These products are made so that they will tighten up the skin right away once they are applied, but once you wash them off or after a few hours, the effects goes away. The effects are not in the skin, but rather on the skin. The difference here is that we’re affecting inside the skin and not on top of the skin. With Luminesce™, we’re penetrating into the skin and cells.
It takes time for processes to happen in your body. Nothing happens right away. I’ve had people see improvements in their skin within just one to two weeks, and I’ve also had people using it for months and months who keep getting more and more improvements. The reason that improvements often take a bit longer is that it takes three months for collagen regeneration, starting from the time you apply the product. This is simply how our bodies work– no cream, dermatologist, or laser is going to change this because we cannot change nature. So, if you’re seeing changes right away, these are topical changes resulting from the turnover of the cells; this can happen in about a week. However, the more permanent and long-lasting results that are occurring in the deeper layers of the skin are going to take three months. Therefore, if you really want to test a product on the skin for long-term results, you should wait until at least three months after application.
Dave Phelps: “Is there a shelf life to Luminesce™?”
Dr. Newman: Yes, two years.
Audience: Are there any preservatives?
Dr. Newman: The product has natural preservatives. It has to have a natural preservative because it is a live product; otherwise, it would only last two days. There are no chemical preservatives. Everything in the product is natural.
Dave Phelps: “Will there be any future for stem cell technology to make eyelashes grow longer or fuller??
Dr. Newman: Yes, that’s what we’ve been working on.
Dave Phelps: “Does the quality of the product change under any conditions other than what you’ve already talked about, such as exposure to high heat?”
Dr. Newman: The quality of the product doesn’t change, but the results can, depending on what you are actually doing to your skin. If your skin is at the right pH, meaning, if your skin’s at a healthy pH of 5.5, you’re going to get a better result than if your skin has inflammatory areas that are not doing well and your skin’s pH is 6.5–it’s going to take longer to get the result. If you have a lot of things to heal in your skin, it’s going to take you longer to get the long-term results. If you have good skin to begin with, you’re going to get results faster and be able to focus on maintenance.
Dave Phelps: “It seems like Luminesce™ has fantastic results with fine lines, wrinkles, and color spots–what about more significant issues such as turkey neck?”
Dr. Newman: Thanksgiving? OK.
Dave Phelps: Is that a clinical term, or is that a colloquial term?
Dr. Newman: Well, “turkey neck” is the result of one of two things: it’s either an accumulation of fat under the neck, which would need to be taken out because it is hypertrophied and there’s too much in there–in which case Luminsce™ is not going to help–or it could be your skin’s elasticity. When you lose elasticity, your skin gets loose and droops, and no longer has the ability to snap back like a stretched rubber band. Instead, it’s as if somebody stretched it and it just stayed that way. In these cases, cream is
not going to help and neither is the serum–even the stem cells by themselves are not going to be of any help. You will have to go through the process of doing a more dramatic cosmetic procedure. But, the whole idea is to start using Luminesce™ when you’re younger instead of waiting until you’re at the point where your turkey neck is hanging down to here. You want to prevent you’re skin from getting so saggy that it loses its elasticity, and work towards maintaining its youthful memory. When I pinch my skin, it goes back to where it’s supposed to–that’s the idea.
Dave Phelps: In network marketing, we have boundless optimism. I’m very sorry for “turkey neck”. Here is the next question: “I have used Luminesce™ for about two months. The blackheads around my nose never go away. Some days there are less, some days there are more. Please explain.”
Dr. Newman: Good question. Blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, and milia, are not going to go away. All these things are not going to go away by using Luminesce™ because they are the result of clogged pores. Clogged pores need to be opened up. If you have people that can’t wait for us to get the next line of products that will help them with their blackheads out, I would suggest that in the meantime, they either get facials to remove the blackheads or use exfoliants like salicylic acid that open up the pores and remove the blackheads in conjunction with Luminesce™. Also, a lot of people who think they have blackheads on their nose actually don’t–they have little hairs, however these will not going to go away by using Luminesce™ either.
Dave Phelps: “One thing that appears to be so special about Luminesce™ is that it seems to be one of the only products on the market that uses adult stem cell technology. I have seen some other similar sounding products advertised, but when I looked into them, they really had nothing to do with stem cell technology. Can you tell us if our product is the only product using stem cell technology today?”
Dr. Newman: Luminesce™ is not the only product using stem cell technology, but it is the only product using adult human fat cells and that’s what’s unique. There’s a lot of hype right now because of changes in the American government policies on stem cell research. The government began to allow stem cell research to take place, and suddenly, overnight, everything had to do with stem cells–stem cell apples, stem cell plants, and stem cell everything. All these ideas are more of a gimmick than true science. There are a lot of stem cell products that are in development right now. The main benefit that we have with Luminesce™ over these other products is that it is very unique–it uses human and not animal stem cells, taken from fat and not anywhere else. These types of stem cells are the best type to use for your skin and provide the most benefits with the most natural results. Are there other companies who are going to try to mimic us? I’m sure there will be, but this type of product takes years to produce. Luminesce™ is not an easy product to produce–it is actually very difficult product to produce because it contains live product.
A lot of people will tell you that they’re doing the same types of things that we are. I don’t know if any of you do research on some of these other products that are out there, such as the stem cell creams with the apples, but the problem is that nobody regulates these things and consequently, you have to be very careful. Often, they simply write “stem cell” on the bottle, but you have to ask yourself questions like “what lab is it being made in and what types of tests are they doing?” It’s very difficult to know how true
these product claims are. I can tell you right now that we’re the first ones, we’re the only ones, and we’re the best ones.
Dave Phelps: “I really like your explanation that the cells communicate with each other. Does this mean that our product actually stimulates the production of collagen when you put it on our face?”
Dr. Newman: Yes, that’s exactly what happens. It not only stimulates collagen, it tells your cells to renew and build new blood vessels. The whole idea of using the stem cell-like language is to get the stem cells to repair themselves. In terms of Luminesce™–once you apply this product to your skin, it’s going to penetrate and interact with your cells. It’s going to tell the cells, “Listen, you need to get better.” You may have an inflammatory process that is occurring, like in rosacea or acne– in these cases, Luminesce™ is going to go in tell your cells to work to fix this.
Dave Phelps: This is the last question. “We consider it to be a great privilege that you are helping Jeunesse. What is the most exciting thing that you can tell all of us about stem cell technology that will help us to build our business?”
Dr. Newman: The most exciting thing is that this is no longer science fiction–this is a true and clinically tested product that is not just in the laboratory anymore. We’re using it and we’re doing it. Science has come a long way in the last five years with regard to stem cells. Things have changed a lot and the face of medicine will continue to change because of stem cells. Most of you have already heard about Randy’s knee–what he had done to him will be standard medical care in five or ten years. We’re not talking about your parent’s generation when they didn’t even have lasers; we’re talking about things changing very quickly here. In the next five years, stem cells will become a very important and integral part of medicine and we’re on the forefront of that. We have very good products that have come from stem cell technology and we also have a lot of experience with reconstructive and cosmetic procedures that are also based on this same technology. We’re working on developing the next product that will come from this technology. Hopefully we can achieve success with the hair products I mentioned before; as this will definitely revolutionize what we’ll be seeing is cosmetic treatments as well.
Dave Phelps: Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in thanking Dr. Newman with a round of applause.
